OK, that'll have to wait until tomorrow but I'll check. I ran it a bit this morning. It will start when I hold the throttle open. I was able to get it into gear without it stalling - and got the rpms up. Rpms increase until it sneezes (exhaust), then rpms drop and it sounds like it's running...
Morning. Added a few pictures of the reeds (they look good to me, but you guys would know better than me). Also highlighted the two different gaskets. Kind of odd - the paint surrounding it looks like it originally came with the rectangular shaped gasket - but the hole doesn't line up with...
Hey Scott,
I believe so. I've seen threads about guys using the wrong gasket and blocking the fuel flow. I've had this carb off and on about half a dozen times now. I'll look again tomorrow as the rebuild kit came with two very different looking gaskets.
As far as the carb itself -...

Morning guys,
This is my dad's old motor. He had all sorts of trouble with it the last few years - in and out of the shop multiple...
Sorry I never got around to following up. I'm now able to start it consistently - I just had to change up the startup procedure.
Hold key in (choke) for 8-10 seconds.
Engage starter - motor typically fires once.
Repeat process.
Engage starter with no choke - engine fires and as soon as it does...
I'm not cranking it much. Maybe I'm not explaining it well. As soon as push the key in, turn; and hold - the starter briefly engages the flywheel, then disengages. As soon as it does so I release the key. I'm not just spinning it.
Once I'm past the initial cold start it fires immediately. Feels...
Sorry for peppering responses here. I let it sit for about 6 hrs - just went out and it started right up. I'll try it again in the morning before I go to work. Usually when it sits overnight I have to go through the 10-15 minutes of cranking it before it pops.
Hey racer.
Yeah that's the thing - if I'm holding the key in it won't continually crank. Just turns the motor over for 1-2 seconds - then the starter disengages.
Afternoon guys,
I have what I believe to be a 1989 or 1990 Mariner 40 horse. Serial # 0C188217.
Long story short, neighbor gave me his old pontoon boat because he was tired of dealing with this outboard. I gave it some TLC last year - cleaned the carbs, replaced all the fuel lines, change...
