Huh. The darndest thing:
I was looking at the video of a guy on youtube with this exact engine, and he was talking about adjusting the idle screw and I noticed his screw was way, way, in. Like the head of the screw was below the plastic housing. So I figured I could try that just to see if it...
I did a compression and spark test. A spark jumped the 7/16" gap on both plugs. I got 100psi for the top cylinder and ~97 or 98 for the bottom. This was with the engine cold.
Thanks. Will do. Last season I couldn't get it running at all so I took off and cleaned the fuel lines, got it a new tank and bulb and line, replaced the fuel filter, dissembled and cleaned the carb, replaced the primer parts (and confirmed it squirts gas when you pull the primer knob) and the...
Well I tried screwing in the idle screw as far as it would go and still no go. I was doing the knob procedure correctly (out and to the right.). I have to advance the arm manually another full inch or so to give it enough gas to get it to started. Image shows about how far up I have to push it...
I'll double check to make sure I'm doing the knob procedure correctly and try a little tweak of that screw as needed to see if it helps and report back (if this solves the issue or clarifies the problem). Many thanks again!
Thanks! Just to be clear: the idle screw is the one circled in red below, right? (Seems like turning the stop circled in green would also advance the same arm.)
And yeah, it's a circle pull-to-prime and turn-to-increase-idle knob. That definitely helps keep it going once it's started but it's...
Tiller. And here (hopefully!) is the picture showing the arm I manually advance a little to get it started. I had it on mufflers so didn't run it long but to get the boat out of the water last year I ran it with arm manually advanced for a few minutes, then put it in gear, and was able to run...
At the end of last season I did a carb rebuild and got this outboard that wasn’t starting going again. But in order to get it started I have to manually advance the arm circled in red in pic below to give it more gas. That seems to suggest I just need to adjust the idle? But there are about...
Many thanks again for your help! Googling around it does seem (from discussion of a similar though not identical merc carb) that the emulsion tube is not removable without risking damage since it's pressed in. But I should be able to get a thin wire in there. And it sounds like it may be worth...
Thanks again for the suggestion, @Oldsaltydog . I took the carb out and apart and am having trouble identifying the jet from the diagram. Is it this little thing with the hole on the bottom and two sides? They look pretty open and round.
Or I also wondered about this (non-removable?) brass...
Ok I did a compression and spark test. A spark jumped the 7/16" gap on both plugs. I got 100psi for the top cylinder and ~97 or 98 for the bottom. This was with the engine cold. I don't really know what I'm looking for here but gather that this is on the low end, but good that the pressure is...
