    1975 Mercury 7.5 HP shift lever issue (stuck all the way down past reverse) and proper linkage/lower unit alignment

    If you move the shifter all the way past reverse, you should be able to turn the gear under that and center the shaft. That was my issue sounds very similar to what you have going on.
