    Alpha 1 Gen 1 shift shaft seal

    The shift shaft seal on Mercruiser is a single lip seal facing out to keep water out. If you park the unit in hot sun in your driveway, that seal also acts as a pressure relief, and it is perfectly normal for it to burp a little oil so the gearcase won't over-pressurize and damage other seals.
