I'm inclined - but to lazy - and willing to gamble a bit -
Thought about taking it apart (just waiting for carrier bearing) and put gear in oven @ 275F and then see if I can get the bearing out (maybe with the help of an CO2 piece of ice on the bearing. Then re-assemble with loctite 609 or...
I had a 1967 Ford Galaxie - a long time ago - liked it as it was a body on chassis mounted with rubber things - very quiet ride. Rear axle developed a whine so I took it apart to sort out the clearances - also found one of the differential carrier bearing has done some spinning. other than that...
what I meant:
good on paper
The idiom "good on paper" means something or someone appears ideal, promising, or well-suited based on a written description, plan, or set of statistics, but may not actually work out well in real-world practice. [1, 2]
Ya, good thing to be aware of. Propshaft checks out w/less than 0.001 in via dial indicator. Prop? For sure a little vibration as it has been "pronged a few times" and I bend the blade using an 18 inch cresent (adjustable) wrench and file the rough edges of the blades. It's not often I run...
I had to use a press to push the bearing back into the bore - the press has a 1 foot long handle to operate the ram - the press is rated 1 ton and bearing went in smoothy and with notable resistance. If this fails again - I'm replacing with Mercury gear or GLM with the retaining ring...
kghost:
regarding "only Mercury" - maybe their instruction to use LOCTITE 271 on the bearing installation is the reason?
Another possibility is bore vs. bearing diameter. Just thinking out loud - maybe Mercury bore is a 10 thousandth smaller bore diameter - hence more of the Interference fit...
Thank you to everyone who replied -
I had a 15 mile or so run w/engine turning 3-4K (28 mph on the two-ton searay) and stopped to walk a beach - when I went to back away - would not go into reverse - gearshift would barely go past detent.
When I pulled it apart - no metal - oil fine - nothing...
My 1979 SearRay w/Alpha 1 outdrive would not go into reverse gear.
I bought tools to disassemble and found the Forward Gear needle bearing had moved out of the gear bore about 3/8 ths of and inch or so.
Could not move dog-clutch into reverse gear as needle bearing prevented shift spool from...
