Bizarre sudden appearance of oil/soot in cooling water after oil change

Ahh, I see, thanks for that. Excellent explanation. Indeed as jimn said, though it has 74% good reviews, some of the reviews for that tubing you recommended are not very good. I'll shop around a bit before using that one.

Bizarre sudden appearance of oil/soot in cooling water after oil change

Thanks, louc and kghost and others...I ordered that hose. But if that tygon hose is a fuel line from the pump to the carb, shouldn't I see liquid in there if the pump is working correctly? I must be missing something about the flow of fuel from pump to carb. kghost said "The sight tube will...

Bizarre sudden appearance of oil/soot in cooling water after oil change

Ok, thanks a million to everyone who weighed in here to help me. What a fabulous resource you all are! Don't have time to mess with it for at least the next week, but I'm eager to see what I can do to get this sweet little engine back in the groove!

Bizarre sudden appearance of oil/soot in cooling water after oil change

Ok, here are all four plugs, and one up close. All are black, but not crudded up. So something's been causing it to run rich. Duh, you might say, given what we've seen so far. It's been suggested that blocked fuel filters might contribute to this problem...but wouldn't that incline the thing...

Here are photos of the fuel pump and carburetor. Where might a filter be in this system?

Don't know what the sight tube is. Maybe I don't have one?

Bizarre sudden appearance of oil/soot in cooling water after oil change

I was assuming that the theory of it being a fuel problem is that the black stuff is a result of very poor combustion of the compromised fuel, not that the black stuff itself actually came through the carb. If the head gasket or intake gasket failed, how would the black stuff appear? Water...

Bizarre sudden appearance of oil/soot in cooling water after oil change

So could sooty exhaust be caused by water in the fuel? Any suggestions for best way to drain fuel tank effectively, if there's no drain plug on the tank?

Bizarre sudden appearance of oil/soot in cooling water after oil change

Hey, thanks so much for your reply, Louc, I hadn't thought of that. Two local folks independently suggested that this is caused by a fuel problem, and that I should clean the carb, because it could be dumping too much fuel into the engine, or that the fuel may be contaminated with water or...

Bizarre sudden appearance of oil/soot in cooling water after oil change

I've got a 1984 Mercruiser 120 system in an 18' "Mercedes" runabout. Engine has been running beautifully. Recently replaced exhaust manifold and riser. Drained oil from engine at the end of the season, but didn't have an oil filter, so left it empty of oil for a week. Did not drain water...

Any quick advice on purchase of 1999 VP 3.0 GS engine with VP SX outdrive?

Hi Good Folks, Still shopping for good deal on a 17' runabout. $2800 Glasply w/ VP145 got away from me, now looking at $3000 1979 Glasply repowered with 1999 VP3.0 GS engine w/ heat exchanger cooling, and 1999 VP SX outdrive. Not knowing anything about these units, can anyone suggest...

Sorely tempted to purchase old boat with Volvo/Penta drive, don't know anything about 'em

Hi, thanks for considering giving me a piece of advice! I'm retiring a beloved mid-70s 17' Bayliner with a Mercruiser 120 I/O system that's worn out, looking for a relatively inexpensive replacement, on account of my finances. Seriously considering a 17.5' '81 GlasPly, powered by a 145 Volvo...

Tempted to buy boat with '83 Suzuki DT115, compression 85-95psi. Mistake?
