    "83 40 hp 2 stroke rebuilt but starter will not turn flywheel.

    Also replaced brushes and Bendix gear on starter. Starter works fine off motor. engages flywheel but can't turn it. Burned out starter solenoid trying to start it. Flywheel seems very hard to turn. Takes 48ft/lb to turn it with the plugs out. Is that too much?

    '83 mercury 40 hp starter problem

    just completed the rebuild of our '83, 40 hp merc outboard. can turn crank with wrench on flywheel. Starter will engage but will not turn the flywheel. works fine on the bench and solenoid seems ok. turned the motor fine before we rebuilt it. Seems like it lacks torque to turn the rebuilt motor...
