    85 Johnson 50 makes noise shifting

    The motor does shift in and ou The motor does shift in and out of gear properly but if I move the shifter lever slightly forward or backward without engaging all the way I hear a pinging sound like the gears aren't meshing correctly. Does this mean something is out ot sync?

    VRO line spark arrestor

    I'm a little puzzled by th I'm a little puzzled by the spark arrestor in the VRO oil line. I don't understand why there is one in the oil line and not the fuel line. With that said can the oil line be replaced with a regular fuel grade line? This is my first outboard so it's all new to me...
