    Thanks guys. The boat is a 1987. I just bought this boat this spring and I got no service records with it. I dropped and replaced the lower unit oil as a precaution, and did an oil change and a minor tune-up. I did put the muffs on it and run it on the trailer, but did not turn it side to side...

    Good points. OK, leaving the U-joint replacement out, what would you expect the typical bill to be to replace the gimbal bearing and the bellows?

    If I recall correctly, there was a u-joint in the system between engine and sterndrive. That's what I was referring to.

    Thanks for your response. That's the assumption I am making also. I think I will have it done instead of trying to do it myself. I'll replace the bellows and drive shaft bearing while I am in there...

    I have an Alpha One sterndrive behind a 2.5L 4 cyl. Runs great, But on the last two times out, we noticed: 1) a growl from the sterndrive at certain rpm's that didn't used to be there. I'd find a sweet spot where she was all quiet, and just cruise with it. But if I accelerated, the growl...
