I have one on my 1996 Maxum. Had it 30 years and only thing I've done is rebuild the fuel pump (other than regular maintenance). Compression is still good.

Sounds like maybe a fuel issue. Mechanical pump is driven by crankcase pressure. Do a compression check, will take 15 minutes. It's easy and will give you important info. All should be over 120 psi and close to each other. If compression is within range I would rebuild the fuel pump, at least...

Well 3 loops around the lake at full throttle no stalls. I disconnected the fuel line at the nipple on the side of the boat going to the fuel tank and dropped that line into a jerry can. Next I'll reconnect to the nipple and do another test run. If it stalls out the problem is somewhere upstream...
If cylinder compression is good then vacuum should be good unless there's another issue down the line. Would you know what cylinder compression should be at?
