Thanks for the information. Hopefully I'll get it right. It was over 70 degrees today (3/19) in Iowa. We will be getting the boat in the water fairly soon.
Thanks. I will check the shift rod O-ring. The plastic seals on the screws seem to be in good condition but they are likely original (1979) and probably should be replaced.
I have a 1979 Evinrude engine, model 55975c. I get water in the gear case oil. The oil gets milky after two or three uses. I changed the oil seals last Spring but continue to get water in the gear case oil. I also replaced the large "O" ring that goes on the bearing housing. Perhaps I put...
My 1979 55 hp engine 55975c has been running well this spring and summer. It is a boat that had not been run for 15-20 years before I acquired it. It had an emulsion tube gasket missing in both carburetors. That problem was discovered and solved through this forum. Since then, it has run...
Thanks, everyone. The emulsion tube carb gaskets arrived. Installed them in the carbs and reinstalled the carbs on the engine. Tested the boat on the river today and it ran great. It ran full speed. Thanks for everyone's input.
Right. Since this is a long-standing problem from before I received this boat, I'd say the gaskets were not present when I took the boat to the shop to have the carbs cleaned and renewed. Since the old gaskets were likely not there, he simply restored things like he found them. He definitely...
I removed the carburetors on my 1979 55 hp Evinrude 55975c outboard. I inspected the jets. All were perfectly clean and looked good to my untrained eye. The idle jet is a 45 in the top carb, and an unreadable number (looked like VV) in the lower carb. The off-idle jet is a 37 in the top...
Yes, it has an idle jet, an off-idle jet and a high-speed jet. I've assumed they work together and keep "adding in". It sounds like the high-speed jet works alone above the approximate 1500-1800 rpm range.
I have not taken the carbs off this week as I had planned. I hope to on Monday. I will try to look closely at the items mentioned above. I wonder at what point the carbs go from depending on the off-idle jet to the high-speed jet. My acceleration issue actually becomes apparent somewhat...
