    Thanks very much for the helpful info. Upon closer inspection, the LU fluid wasn't bad. We topped it off, and tested yesterday with light load. Engine got to 6K RPMs easily, at about 35 MPH, in a mild chop (17 pitch prop, that may need refurb). Discovered 13 months remain on factory warranty. :)

    I went back with a little more aggressive approach to the finish, and I believe the discoloration may be on the surface. Still not sure why it's confined to the gearcase like that, but...... Thanks again, William.
