" I just got it, runs decent, , and if I put it in reverse gear the prop turns good, but when I go to forward its like its out of gear. Then I adjusted the linkage far to the forward side and got forward but now the same result inreverse, and cant seem tofind a happy medium. "

Inside the lower unit is a large pin that follows the cam on the end of the shift shaft. I had the same problem and I just replaced the large pin.

If the splines on the shift rods are not meshed properly when the lower unit is installed, it can make it difficult if not impossible to get it to shift properly.

When installing the lower unit, the control lever and the lower unit must be in the same gear, and the linkage adjustment (rubber grommet on the cable) should be in the middle of the threaded area. If the grommet does not fit snugly in the bracket it can also cause this problem. There should be a plastic anchor that the grommet fits in. Sometimes it is missing, causing a loose fit.
