FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Classified Ads for all marine engines. Buy or sell your marine engine here.

What if I need help while posting or viewing the ads? top of page
There is a help feature that is always available while you are viewing or placing ads. It is accessed by clicking on the word "help" on the right side of the top or bottom blue tool bar at the top and bottom of every page.

How do I look at the ads? top of page
First go to CLASSIFIED by clicking on the top header where it says CLASSIFIED. The classified screen will show the major categories of marine engines.  Click on  the one you want to look at. You will then get a choice of sub-categories, such as "for sale", "wanted", "parts for sale", etc. Click on the sub-category that you want to see (or click on "Display All Ads...), and you will get a list of all the ads in that group. Click on the Subject title to see the full ad and thumbnail of the photo if available. When you are viewing the full ad you can click on the small photo (if it includes one) to see an enlarged view. Any time that you want to go back to the main Classified screen, click on "main" on the blue toolbar at the top and bottom of every page.
You can also use the search function from any page, or the advanced search function..

How do I post an ad? top of page
In order to post an ad you must register as a new user. Click on "post ad" on the blue toolbar. Then if you haven't registered before, click on "New User Registration Form". Follow the instructions to register. When you are finished, click on "post ad" again, and enter you e-mail and password. Then pick a category for your ad, then pick a sub-category, and enter your ad information. You don't have to fill in every field. For instance price or condition. The only required field is the Headline.

Why do I have to register? top of page
The purpose of the registration three-fold.
First it allows users to have access to all the ads they have posted, so that they (and only they) can edit or delete the ad.
Second it speeds up the process of placing ads. Your nickname, e-mail, and location are already established in your "user profile", and do not have to be re-entered for each ad.
Third it allows a viewer to click on "Display ads posted by XYZ" to see all the ads posted by a user.  Registration is NOT for the purpose of allowing me to sell or share your information with others. I will not sell or share your information with anyone. I may occasionally send you e-mail to notify you about information related to this site, if you request to be on my list during registration. The registration is quick and easy. Phone number and street address is not required. You may also want to read our Privacy Statement.

What if I don't want to list my phone number? top of page
If you don't want to list your phone number than don't. It is not a required field. You may also want to read our Privacy Statement.

Can I include html tags or my website address? top of page
No. This is a classified ad service, not a newsgroup or a links page for your site. Allow the buyer or seller to contact you by e-mail or phone. Html tags will not work in the system. We appreciate your valid use of the system and  will edit ads that do not conform.

What if I don't want to list any personal information? top of page
If you are strongly opposed to listing any personal information, I would suggest that in the registration process you enter your first name only. Remember, only your username will appear in the ad. You must include your city and state so that can appear in the ad as the location of the listed item.

What type of ads are allowed to be posted? top of page
MarineEngine.com is for the listing of marine engines, marine engine parts, and marine engine manuals and literature. That includes inboards, outboards, I/O, marine generators, and all the categories you see on the "main" Classified page. Ads for anything not directly related to marine engines are not allowed, including boats. This is not the place for automotive engines, farm engines, boats, boat parts and accessories, or model boat engines. If you have any questions about whether a listing is appropriate or not, please contact me. If you would like me to add a category or a sub-category for a marine engine related item, contact me about it.

How should I format my ad for the best results? top of page
Your ad should present as much information as possible to the reader. The Headline of the ad should contain the general description, including the manufacturer's name, and not be cluttered with details. Include the details in the "Additional Information" section. Listing a price and condition is usually helpful and will increase the "qualified response" to your ad. A good photo is always a help. Don't use abbreviations that will confuse the user. Don't use all capitals, it looks TOO LOUD and is difficult to read. If the location of the item is different from the location in your "user profile", be sure to state that in the body of the ad.

How do I renew my ad? top of page
Select "ad maintenance" from the blue toolbar. Note the expiration date of the ad indicated with each ad. Select the renew button,  and then pick a time duration for the renewal.

How will I know when my ad will expire? top of page
We will send you an e-mail notification approximately three days prior to the expiration of your ad so you can choose to let it expire or to renew it.

What if I sell the item and want to remove the ad? top of page
Simply go into "ad maintenance" and delete the individual ad.

What if I forget my password? top of page
At the login screen you can click on the link "forgot Password?", and you will prompted for your e-mail address. Enter your address, and you password will be mailed to you. Your password can only be mailed to the address that you registered with.

You have a lot of options for how to buy or sell anything, including marine engines. MarineEngine.com has certain advantages over other advertising options. Unlike the other boating classified sites, it is specific to marine engines. Your ad will not get lost in the muddle of boats, fish finders, life jackets, exercise equipment, or Pokemon cards. Our focus is marine engines. We are directing our advertising and our search engine position to be noticed as the online source to buy and sell marine engines. Focused users at the site will help you buy or sell your marine engine or parts.

Am I allowed to spam or post inappropriate ads? top of page
No. Spamming or inappropriate use of this service is not allowed. If your ad is relevant to more than one category or sub-category you can post it to more than one location. You cannot repeatedly post the same ad. How do I reply to an ad? top of page
Simply click on the words "reply to ad" on the upper left side of the full view of the ad, and you will prompted to send an e-mail directly to the person who listed the ad.

Should my ad be ALL CAPITALS? top of page
NO. It is commonly agreed that mixed upper and lower case text is easier and more pleasant to read. All capitals LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING, and tends to put off the reader. Mixed case will make your ad more likely to be read.

How should my ad be written? top of page
The desired result for your ad is to have a qualified potential buyer contact you for more information. What..... the goal of the ad is not to sell the item?!! Ultimately, it is, but the ad will not sell the item, you will. The ad will just put you in contact with buyers.
The best way to get qualified buyers to contact you,  is to include as much relevant information as possible, and include a good photograph. Be as complete as possible in your description of condition, age, and features. Don't use abbreviations. Abbreviations are common in print classified ads because the seller is billed by the character. Abbreviations may confuse some potential buyers.  With For Sale ads, in most cases it is best to include the price, not doing so may waste your time with response from buyers who are looking for something well below your asking price.
Most importantly, follow up quickly and thoroughly when someone contacts you for more information. Classified ads can bring in potential buyers, but you have to close the deal.  Be prepared for the expected question, such as additional information on condition, price flexibility, shipping information, etc. When you answer the first such question, save the text in a word processing or notepad file so you can copy and paste it into the response to the next inquiry. E-mail is an ideal method of communicating this sort of information. You may have to repeat the same information to multiple potential buyers, and e-mail makes it easy to replicate the response.

What if I want to see just the new ads posted? top of page
Click on the "New ads posted today" link on the main page. If you want to see more than just todays ads, in a chronological listing, go to the search function and type in the month (abbreviated as done in the system, Jan, Feb, Mar, etc). Then click SEARCH. For example "Feb" will get you all the posts from February  plus a few others where feb is part of another word. Give it a try.

What if I don't get a confirming e-mail after posting? top of page

You should get a confirming e-mail after you post each ad. If you don't it probably means that you e-mail is incorrectly entered. Go to the site and click on MY PROFILE to check your e-mail address. If your e-mail is wrong in your profile then users will not be able to send you a message about your ad. If you don't get a confirming e-mail after posting your ad, please contact me.
