I recently was given a 35 year old boat that still runs well. My question involves water intake. I was told that since the engine is older and it was made to motor fresh water, I would not be able to take in in salt water (which I live in now) because the intake is for fresh water and the salt will damage the engine. Is there any truth to this?

Truth?..... If this is an outboard, no. If this is a inboard that has been converted to a fresh water system, yes. However, that's the extend of my knowledge on the matter. Hopefully a expert on your question can go into more detail once you define the engine.

Correction... I was thinking of something altogether different pertaining to my "yes" answer. Please disregard. Thanks.

In salt water the usual problem for fresh water inboards is the dissimliar metals used on the construction. You'll get electrolysis and a lot of corrosion including the engine. It's best to use fresh water cooling if you can. Also change out parts such as the drive shaft and the rudder of they are steel.

Iam thinking about buying a 99 Honda 40 hp 4 stroke. The motor has been run in salt water,I willbe using it in fresh water. My ouestions are, what problems might arise from use in salt water, and whatparts should be checked or replaced.
