There is usually a plug on the side of the lower unit with a small embossed word next to it on the outside of the lower case that says "FLUSH". What you do is pump about a gazillion gallons of water through there to "flush out" the water system. This is supposed to clean out any debries that are picked up while crusing through weeds and stuff. The impeller is a round rubber gear type thingy that is in the upper unit(thats on the shaft that goes in the water, except its the upper one on the engine not the lower one on the prop.)The impeller is turned by the engine and forces water through the engine to cool it.
