Andy.... As with any outboard engine (or any other type engine for that matter), always make sure that the compression is where it should be. On that engine, it should be over 100lbs and all cylinders should be about even. A variation of 4 or 5 lbs is usually okay, but if you encounter say a difference of 10, 12 lbs or more between cylinders.... there's a big problem brewing! The spark (with the s/plugs out) should jump a 7/16" gap. Drain a small amount of lube from the lower unit, checking for water or metal filings. Very fine metal filings on the lower unit drain plug magnet (fuzzy stuff) are okay, but metal filings such as "splinter type" material are not! One thing, a "VERY IMPORTANT THING" to keep in mind with the 1979 engines is that they originally were built with what is normally called "High Ring Pistons" which were fine when the quality of gasoline was where it should be. However, later, after that date.... the quality of gasoline dropped to a level whereas those "High Ring Pistons" failed left and right, resulting in of course... blown powerheads (usually ranging in the $1800 price range to repair). The "High Ring Pistons" have the top piston ring so close to the top of the piston (approx 1/64") that the ring would curl, grab either the exhaust or intake port, tearing the piston to pieces and damaging the cylinder wall. The only way to really see if you have these type pistons in the engine or not is to remove the cyl heads, bring the piton up to top dead center, and using a feler gauge or some thin item, slide it down the side of the piston to determine where that top ring is. If the engine has been rebuilt in the past, it should have the newer lower type pistons and rings installed. But it's best to check it out. (Joe - 30+ years with OMC) |

i just recently purchaced a 16 foot boat with a johnson v4 seahorse. i believe it is a '79 model and 85 hp. i've only seen it idle once. smoked a bit. haven't had her in the water yet. still need to get the paperwork transfered proper. I can't afford to rebuild the engine if it has these kind of problems. another concern is the transom. possibly rotted. definitely weak. do you know any inexpensive or "quick fixes"?
