| STARTER PROBLEM ON A 1980 CC CATALINA... |

JUST LAUNCHED MY BOAT FOR THE SEASON UP HERE IN THE NORTHEAST (BOSTON) WHEN I SLIPPED THE BOAT AT THE DOCK AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE..I HAD RUN THE BOAT AT SLOW WAKE SPEED UP THE RIVER WHERE I KEEP IT AND HAD MADE ABOUT 8 PASSES AT DOCKING(I'M NOT GOOD AT DOCKING IN A WIND) I FINALLY TIED UP AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE..DECIDED TO START IT UP AGAIN IMMEDIATELY AND HIT THE IGNITION SWITCH..I HEARD A "ZINGING" SOUND FROM THE STARTER AND IT DID NOT ENGAGE THE FLYWHEEL RING GEAR..THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENENED BEFORE..THE BATTERIES ARE CHARGED UP..I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE AN OVERHEATING PROBLEM WITH THE STARTER, SO I LET IT REST FOR A FEW HOURS..WHEN TRIED TO START THE ENGINE AGAIN I GOT THE SAME SOUND..I HATE THESE EARLY SEASON COINCIDENCES..I DONT KNOW HOW OLD THE STARTER IS BUT THE GUY WHO HAD THE BOAT BEFORE ME WAS A METICULOUS MECHANIC..IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE THE SOLENOID IS STUCK..ANY GUESSES FROM FELLOW BOATERS? you CAN take the starter off, take it apart, replace the bad pieces,+ put it back,,,, OR bolt on a new 1,+ forget it... |
