How does the mercruiser cooling system work? I have a 5.7 with an Alpha I stern drive and I'm not sure where the water is picked up and where it exits? How can I determine if its operating correctly without the obvious of overheating? I'm new to the boating arena and look to you vets for guidance. Thanks!!

Mark,

You might want to start by reading one of the manuals that cover that engine and drive:

Mercruiser : Stern Drive Shop Manual 1986-1994 : Alpha One, Bravo One, Bravo Two & Bravo Three

Mark, Andrew is correct in that you should get a "factory" manual for your drive system. To answer your question, your drive picks up water through the bottom half of your lower unit. Just ahead of your prop you'll find a spot where there are about five slots vertically cut into each side of the housing..... that's your raw water pickup. There's an engine-driven water pump in the lower unit that pulls water and sends it to the engine pump(which is the same as a water pump on your car/truck) It cools the engine much the same as a regular cooling system, and from there the water exits through the exhaust manifolds and the elbows. I always knew mine was working by being able to touch the elbows while it was running. The cooling water also cools the exhaust on the way out and I never burnt my hand at all..... seems primative but it worked for me!!!!!
