I disassembled my 20 hp Merc. carb.to clean out gum and stale gas. I reassembled it but have a spring left over which is about 1 1/4" long x 3/8" wide . I think the spring goes in the primer housing behind the primer pull plunger, but not positive. Does anyone know where this spring may go or have an exploded view of this carb? There are only about two springs used inside this carb.

Robert, rather than take a guess, why not ask your local, friendly Merc dealer to run you off the exploded parts view from his parts computer. This info may also be available in an aftermarket service manual. I have a carb from my 2001 Merc 20 in front of me and it has two springs that could be the one you are talking about so rather than confuse each other I suggest asking the pros. Of course some lifetime Merc mechanic may chime in and save the day... Good Luck and post your results, we all can learn from each other. Kim

THE SPRING YOU DESCRIBE GOES IN THE PRIMER BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE DIAPHRAGM. IT'S PURPOSE IS TO HOLD THE BLUE PLUNGER UP. THERE IS ALSO A SMALL SPRING IN THE BOTTOM OF THE PRIMER INSIDE THE BRASS NUT AND IT HOLDS THE STEEL BALL AGAINST THE SEAT. DON'T LOSE IT BECAUSE YOU CAN'T BUY IT SEPARATE. HOPE THIS HELPS.......BRIAN

Thanks for your responses to my posting. The spring goes under the primer diaphram. The dealer gave me an exploded view of the carb. and Brian was right on the money. Robert
