I think you guys have a great site. From what I have read there are some smart guys here. If someone can help me I would appreciate it. I have a 1986 XR2 that has been trouble free for 10 years. It has developed a loss of power. At take off it sounds and feels like it is only running on half its cylinders. The first time it did it I changed plugs and fuel filter/seperator, next time out it ran fine. Next time out same thing no power. One added twist last time out it failed to start, for the first time since Iv'e had it. After a while of checking wires and hand priming gas it just started and ran fine for a little while, then same thing again. It will get on plane but it takes a long time and the tach pegs at 6000 but the speed never really comes up.Its as if when this happens the tach is somehow affected. Thanks in advance for any help that might be out there.

Try another prop, you may have spun the hub. Do a compression test, do a spark check on each cylinder. When running the engine have a flashlight handy and check the carburetor bores to compare the amount of fuel coming up the main jet.A V6 outboard is really 6 seperate engines with a common block and crankshaft. Each cylinder has its own carburetor, ignition , crankcase compression and cylinder compression and careful trouble shooting is a must.

Thanks for the input Sparky. Compression tested 120# with maybe a pound difference,Checked the prop seems OK,The problem seems intermitent which leads me to think electrical but I dont know where to start.

Use an inductive pickup timing light and hook it up to each sparkplug wire on a test run.Hook it up to #1 and test run, observe the flash on the light. If you see a steady flash at all rpm ranges #1 is OK .Go to #2 using the light as a scope may pinpoint the faulty electrics. Good luck.

Manuel,

I sounds to me that the stator is beginning to go bad. These engines have stators with two sets of windings. One is for low speed and the other is for high (above 1200-1500 rpms) speed.

I have the same problem. A black max 150 ( 1985) in which the motor drops to an idle speed of 5mph. Once the stator was replaced it ran fine. However, only weeks latter the new stator apparently died again. Why would a stator keep dying? is there any way to test for probelms leading to a stator going belly up?
