I rebuilt the carburetors on my 1977 Johnson 75hp motor and adj. The floats to 1/16 like it says in the manual. After I put everything back together it started up fine but it was idling to fast. I tried to adj. The linkage on the carburetors and that did not do any thing. I adj. them as low as it would allow and it still was idling to fast. Does anyone know if there is another adjustment that I could use to adj. the idle?

The idle stop screw on arm and the trunnion on the cable. All throttle plates MUST be closed for proper idling.

On that 1977 motor, it probably has the old style slot-head screws on the rod that links the three carburetors together. Loosen the two slot-head screws that are on the link rod connecting the carbs. All three carbs should be closed at idle. Make sure that all three are closed before re-tightening the screws. If the engine still idles too fast, retard the spark advance arm until you achieve the desired RPM. Of course, this should be done in the water with back pressure on the exhaust. That engine will run faster on the garden hose without back pressure.

With the plates closed wouldn’t that mean the choke is on. Because when I choke the motor it closes the carb plates.

John,
Is the boat in the water? Keep in mind that, due to the lack of backpressure on the exhaust, an outboard on a flush will idle higher than it would if it were in the water.

John.... The throttle butterflies must be synchronized on all three caruretors via the linkages that connect them. They must all open at the same time and close at the same time. Make sure that the carb roller is not touching the cam when you adjust the synchronization.

The same holds true for the choke butterflies, they must open and close in unison.

Make sure that the timing lever is coming to rest on the idle stop. If the carbs were screwed up, someone may have reset the idle stop to compensate. If need be, adjust the idle stop, therefore allowing the timerbase to retard further, this will lower the idle.
