I'm looking at a 9.8 model 1100 mercury to buy. Serial#3183363. I know that some models of the 9.8 had a "drive shaft" problem with a high failure rate. Does anyone know what year is this motor and if it is affected by the "drive shaft" problem? |

Mercury did not use stainless drive shafts on the smaller motors untill 77 or so. They rusted at the oil seals on the lower unit and at the spline in the crankshaft.In 72 the blue trim on the cover was first used . |
