My wife's 1986 40hp 2 stroke Yamaha has been found to have water in all 3 clyinders. Oil tank is clean as well as the gas tank. This motor has been run every two weeks since new and has always run fine. Any ideas on where the water might be coming from short of a cracked block? Thanks,Jim Dunn

Could be a blown head gasket or even a corroded cylinder block. I have a pair of Yamaha cylinder heads that came from a 4 year old Yamaha V-6 that had a hole in each cylinder head. It had corroded from the water jacket on the head into the combustion chamber in two cylinders-one on each bank. Since the engine at the time was only four years old, I figured Yamaha service would help out the customer with some sort of adjustment, but was told point blank "that's not our problem, it's out of warranty." Since then I have had one of the cylinder heads hanging on the shop wall, and whenever someone asks me what I think of Yamahas, I show them the heads-nothing else needs be said.

Jmd,

Another possibility is the gaskets for the exhaust manifold, or the cover plate over the manifold.

Tom is correct. The Japanese engines can suffer from severe electrolysis. My opinion is that the causes are a poor mix of metals and inconsistent alloys.

Tony
