Any problems you pros can help avoid? Is it OK to use a THIN coat of red hi tack spray on head gaskets? Need to seal bolts going thru any water passages? thanks

Larry,

Use sealer on the crankcase halves. You shouldn't need sealer on the head gasket, but if you do use some, don't apply it to the part of the gasket that seats around the cylinder. You don't want any sealer inside the cylinder.

Hi,

I've heard of Perfect Seal being used when putting Stainless Steel bolts into aluminum to help with corrosion. Red Loctite on Rod bolts, Yamabond 4 on crankcase halves. Use just a little bit on the spagetti (sp?) seal to prevent it from shimming the case halves apart.

Don't use gasket compound on the crankcase halves! Block was machined w/0 clearance between halves. The only way to maintain 0 clearance and still maintain a good seal is with GelSeal. Any clearance added to the mate of the halves is added to the fit of the main bearings as well. This is no good.

Also make sure you use a new oil pump drive gear and shaft. These two items are the leading cause of bearing failure in Merc engines.

You are exactly right.I've been holding off putting crank cover on till I find the right sealer,it is tempting to coat with RTV or permatex! I am not going to use the oil pump,I disconnect all oil injection on my motors,as far as I'm concerned it's not a question of if it's going to fail,it's when! They make a dummy plug and cap for Merc oil pump removal. The damn plastic oil feed hoses get brittle and break, thats what happened to this one.I bought this pair of 2.5 offshores for $2000 both!Found an excellent machine and repair shop in tennessee for block repair(MarFab),can highly reccommend.I wonder why they won't guarantee the V-6 Merc crankshafts from # 1 journal breakage? Not a big Merc fan. thanks
