I was just pointed to this site. I have two engines that I need assistance in identifing. The first one is a Single Cylinder Marine Engine (I think) - Phots are on my web page http://www.oldengine.org/members/sbarr/ under My Engines - Unknown Green Engine. Someone has suggested that it is a Griffith Motor Company engine, but I am usure and have not found any more information.

The second engine is a v8 and stuck. Photos and information is located at: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=971031&a=7568218

Thanks

Steve,
I don't think that single cylinder engine is a marine engine.
  • The base is wrong... marine engines designs always make an effort to keep the crankshaft low so the the shaft angle can be close to parallel to the keel.
  • Also the base of most early marine engines has a wider flange to allow the engine to mount on the longitudinal engine bed, yours appears to be made to mount on a flat floor.
  • The output shaft appears to be hollow and is not keyed for a coupling.

I am not familiar with Griffith as a marine engine builder, and it does not show up in the indexes that I have.

For other information on pre-1940 marine engines you can check OldMarineEngine.com.

Hopefull someone else can identify your V8.

Steve,
I looked again at your V8.

It is a TU14D which I believe is a 200HP OMC built in 1966.

omc

Are you looking for parts, service manual... ?

I could probably get you service manual if you need one.

Our directory has a lot of listings for gas inboard parts

Andrew

Thanks for the response. The mystery continues about the Green Engine....

The v8 is currently stuck and was donated to a camp. We are working on getting a replacement engine or rebuilding this one. Details are still being worked out. We just could not nail down exactly which type it is. Thanks for the assistance.

Steve

Steve, Your V-8 appears to be a converted buick eng. Probably a 350c.i.d. Very few marine engine suppliers actually cast their own engines. Rather they "convert" automotive engines. The casting no. on the manifold is G.M. and the rochester 2-jet is a dead giveaway. If you are serious about rebuilding it a good machine shop can verify this and parts should be readily available

Andrew, Steve and others,

I'm not so familiar with these sites but looking for information on the V8 that is in my boat based on the productcode (TU14D / our s/n W51312) I hit this site. The engine is connected to a Johnson heckdrive and running smoothly. I could use something like a service manual because the vibration damper between the engine and the gear casing is broke and I would like to get it fixed ordently.

The boat, 'probably' a Marino Rocca (made in Finland) is situated in the Netherlands, near Nijmegen. The engine is not an original fit for this boat.

Kind regards, Richard

Richard,

That number TU14D indicates a 200HP OMC sterndrive from 1966. We can supply Owner's, Service, and Parts manuals at this page. Does that date make sense for you boat and engine...?

Or you could get the OMC Sterndrive Seloc manual.

Regards,
Andrew

Andrew,

Looks good! The Seloc manual is as complete as the OSP manuals? How quick should it be here when I order it?

Kind regards, Richard

Richard,

An aftermarket manual like the Seloc manuals are different than the factory manuals. The have good illustrations and cover the various proceedures in detail. The cover a range of engines and show proceedures that are common to those models. The Seloc OMC page has a link to a sample index which will give you an idea of what the manual contains.

The factory manuals are usually specific to a smaller range of engine models... and have very complete specs and details on those models.

It's up to you what you like.... the best is to have both....!

Regards,
Andrew Menkart
