Thanks to all who helped out the last time with my no spark condition. It was the power pack and she is up and running again.
The engine runs good at higher speeds but idles like crap so I took the carbs off and went through them with a good cleaning. My question is on the idle mixture screws. They didn't seem to have any effect on how the motor ran and when I removed them they are just a regular machine bolt. It appears there are seats behind them like there should be a needle screw here instead. Can anyone tell me if the machine screws are right or not? They are flat on the end and do not have any needle to them.

Hey, Bob. I have the 83 version of that motor. Same motor I believe (unless the manual is lying). I just cleaned my carbs tonight. They had been sitting for 4 years.

I was wondering the same thing. When I pulled mine out, there was nothing other than the screw. The manual shows there should be a piece there, but I had nothing. Maybe we're both off and there should be something. Let me know if you find something out, and I'll do the same for you.

Thanks,

Jason

Will do Jason. I'm hoping the resident OMC expert Joe will stop by with an answer :0)

They are fixed high and low speed jets.Carburetors on outboards are very reliable and dirt is the only enemy. The best thing to do is run them dry before putting the boat on the trailer.Make sure that both butterflies are CLOSED in the idle position.

Sparky. So there is no adjustment for idle quality? I've read other posts where the poster was advised to back the screw out 2 turns and then adjust for best quality idle. They were the same year and HP as my model? Does the air somehow get by the machine screw I mentioned or am I waaay off base. Thanks.

No adjustment for mixture. That screw blocks the hole where the slow speed needle used to be on the 76 models and before. If a motor is not idling correctly there is usually something else wrong.Pistons and rings are the common fault on many motors.

Bob..... The screw and red seal gasket are a plug so that excess air will not flow through that passageway. There is a brass fixed slow speed jet further down in that passage (in back of the screw you mention). Should you remove the s/speed jet, look at it carefully and write down its size (imprinted on the jet) just in case it differs with the jet(s) on other carbs. If that jet isn't perfectly clean, it will of course affect the idle.

Note that any engine with more than one carb should not be run out of gas. The top carb will run dry before the other(s) (the engine will continue running on the other carbs) and at least one aluminum piston will be running up and down a steel cylinder wall with improper lubrication.
