Hey Joe, A couple of people I work with have a 1972 Evinrude 50 HP motor with electric shift. Their problem is that the engine will not go into reverse. The motor is running well in forward, but the alternator does not charge the battery. Since it is electric shift I wonder if there is not enough juice for it to work. Also, how does the lower unit connect to the powerhead? The same way it does on my 15, or more like on the V6s and V4s? I wonder if it could be that the shift rod is out of the coupler as it has been on mine. The lower unit has just been rebuilt, so all the gears should be good. What do you think? Thanks for your advice. J.D. |

There is no shift rod . The shifting is done by two solenoids. The green wire has 12 volts for nuetral and for reverse both solenoids are energized. You can bypass the control box by putting power to the wire at the connecter before the wire goes to the lower unit. Check to see if 12 volts is present at the blue wire when the key is on and the reverse button is pushed. Also the motor must be running to shift. The check for voltage can be done when the motor is not running. These electric shift units are very good but not well understood by most people. |

It may very well be that the solenoids are not getting any juice. My friend said that there was a lot of corrosion on the wires. They even had to redo the starter. Which wire is it that controls the reverse gear? It should have 12 volts right? I should be able to test it with my voltmeter shouldn't I? |

In reverse both the green and blue have 12 volts applied to them. |

Could the solenoids themselves be bad? If so, are they expensive to replace? Thanks for the advice. |
