I have a 2000 Johnson 25hp that will not start. The last time I used the outboard was in March and it started but didn't run smooth, like it was missing or not getting enough fuel. I put new plugs in and a fresh tank of gas/oil. I tried to start it yesterday with no luck. So I checked the plugs to see if I flooded it, but they were dry. I noticed when I was pumping the ball valve on the gas tank I could smell gas (more than normal) and also noticed there was gas sitting in the bottom of the engine when I took off the cover. I'm guessing it some sort of fuel problem, but I don't know where to start. |

Spanky.... Check the compression, then the spark. If you have both, and the engine has been sitting for a few months, I'd suspect that the carburetor is fouled. If so, the cure would be to remove, clean, and rebuild it. If on the other hand, you have a fuel leak, it's location should be easy to find by having the hood off, then pumping the fuel primer bulb.

I had a big old hole in the carburetor of my 1999 2 horse Johnson. It was fixed under the shop's warranty. I'm willing to bet you've got a fuel leak somewhere. |
