This is not exactly a motor question, but I have a 115 Johnson on an 18' Bowrider and the steering pulls strongly to the right even with the trim tab pushed way over to the right, which is supposed to counteract this. Any ideas what may be causing this and/or how to correct it?

i have a 75 horse chrysler and it does the same thing, the trim tab you talk about,i don't know if this is it or not but my motor exhaust port fin is adjustable side-to-side,is this the trim tab? if it is,mine was all the way to one side so i centered it and it seemed to help, but the no-feedback steering system is the best bet to stop this. i will install one on mine when i get the money.call rick at 407-343-4733 in fla. he can get you set-up pretty cheap on this system.just tell him Jim from n.c. referred you.hope this helps.Jim King

In agreement with James, the force is cause by the spinning prop, and the only real solution, with the exception of two counter-rotating outboards, is NFB (no-feedback) steering. Adjusting that trim tab helps, but will not eliminate the problem. The complete NFB kits (teleflex I believe owns "NFB") start at about $130 and go up to about $200 depending on the length of cable and size of the outboard, worth every penny. Any marine shop should carry them. Sometimes, depending on what type of cable you've got, you can just buy the NFB helm for about $90.
What NFB does, more or less, is lock the wheel wherever you leave it, so the wheel can place force on the engine, but the engine cannot place force on the wheel.
