I recently bought a 1975 Mercury 20hp. I knew that the previous owner had gone through two props in about three years due to hub failures. The last prop he put on it was a "rebuilt" Michigan Wheel unit. I put a new Mercury prop on it and have been having fun with for a little over a week now.

Today at full throttle the hub began to spin in my new Mercury prop. Luckily I was able to limp back a few miles to the boat ramp at about 1/2 throttle.

Is there something in this motor that can be causing it to use props, or did I just buy a dud prop from Mercury?

A bad water pump impeller would mean that the exhaust is hotter than it should be. This condition could damage the rubber hub in the prop. Heat is the enemy of rubber components.

Zuidema,

I agree with Sparky's comment, and would also advise you to check the prop shaft. A bent shaft can cause hubs to spin.

Is there a way to check the output shaft without removing it?

around the same year engine, same idea, got the motor from a friend, it used to run well, was run in salt water for a weekend about 5 years ago and never flushed. lower unit siezed completely, no prop spin, no water pump, no shifting. Also, the engine will not turn (left to right). I was trying to get the damn lower end off and am having dificulties. I too off one nut just above the prop, took off the zinc plate and the nut that resides below that, but I cannot find another bolt or nut that would release the lower end. The whole lower end is shot. the case is cracked from the previous owner trying to get it apart. When it last ran, it ran very very strong and idled well. It is also missing the tiller as he had it hooked to a cable/pully system. One thing I have yet to figure out is what all is missing from the tiller setup, also, why the thing will not turn. I also realized that the throttle doesn't seem to want to move but i have not messed with that much. Please email me at adam_rogo@msn.com if you could provide any assistance
