I have a Johnson Sea Horse 40 on a 1959 (by registration) 14" fiberglass boat. I'm guessing it's somewhere around 1960 but can't find any model number or S/N ID on the motor. It is an electric start/choke engine. Looked on the port transom bracket and the plug on top of the powerhead (which appears to have been replaced) and can't find anything. Any help is appreciated.

First year of the 40hp was 1960. Does it have a hot water or a hot air choke. Hot water had rubber hoses leading to carburetor, hot air had a single metal tube leading to the carburetor.

You can start here:

A very good site if you like old Johnson and Evinrude. It is german but written in english.

Thanks all for the comments. I got the motor off the boat and cleaned up everything and lo, there is a data plate on the transom mount right in front. Model is 40EL 71B, S/N J3455666. Now to track down a parts manual.
