Hi Joe. I have a 2000 8 hp merc. That at half throttle seems to sputter and almost quits. It never actually quits but is quite annoying. The motor only has about 3 or 4 hours on it. The shop where it was purchased had me mess with the low speed idle, but it did'nt seem to make any difference. In the test tank at the shop they said it ran fine. Any ideas?

Dave,

Down the line a couple posts I put one up to Joe on about same thing, a 2001 25 HP Johnson w/ < 3 hours. Joe's recomendation, as well as my dealers was that it was running lean and it needed a slow speed jet adjustment.. the difference is that mine was doing it more at 1/4 throttle and down, but if your engine is hesitating before it gets to higher RPM's, that could be it. See what Joe says, but if you want to tinker, look on the carb for the low speed jet adjustment screw, turn it 1/8 of turn counter-clockwise. If that has no effect, give it another 1/8. You probably will see an improvement.

Dave.... Jon's advice is pretty well on target. Mercurys are not my line of expertise, and I have no idea as to the design of the Mercury carburetor, timing, etc etc. However in addition to Jon's suggestion, I will add that at the half throttle point, hesitation can be caused (usually) by three things such as:

1 - Slow speed adjustment set too lean.
2 - Partially clogged intermediate or high speed jet (fixed brass jets).
3 - Throttle butterfy(s) opening too soon in relation to the timing.

INITIAL CARB ADJUSTMENT SHOULD BE 1 1/2 TURNS FROM THE CLOSED POSITION. IF IT IS SET LEANER THAN THAT YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE THE PROBLEM YOU ARE DESCRIBING. BRIAN
