I recently purchased a used Merc 125 hp, inline 4 outboard. It hesitates at trottle up, I have changed the plugs and checked the oil settings and I still have this problem. Any thoughts?

HI. GET YOURSELF A MANUAL ON THIS MOTOR. THIS IS NORMAL FOR THIS MOTOR. IT ONLY RUNS ON 2 CYLINDERS UNTIL YOU REACH @ 1800 RPM. THEN THE OTHER 2 CYLINDERS KICK IN. IF IT IS EXCESSIVE THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE IT TO A GOOD DEALER TO HAVE IT SET UP. EXCELLENT ENGINE. I RUN ONE ON MY OWN BASS BOAT FOR 12 YEARS [THE FIRST YEAR THIS DESIGN CAME OUT]. ...BRIAN

Hi,

It could be more complicated, as "TWIN BRIDGE MARINA" stated; there is a little more going on with this engine than your basic outboard.. but, a probable cause of hesitation is that the engine is getting a lean mix (lack of fuel). If what you have there has carburaters, they may be clogged, or have a lean low speed jet setting. Else, it could be bad fuel or some other fuel restriction like a bad pump, lack of tank venting, clogged filter etc. My two cents,

Jon
