I noticed a few posts down a discussion on water pump tell-tale (peehole) discharge with a mention of exhaust port water discharge. I have just picked up a 1978 35HP Mdl 35803 Evinrude and I believe that I have the same situation with a possible partial block on the peehole, however I have really good discharge from the exhaust relief ports on the leg. Would this good discharge of water also confirm that my water pump is working properly. I have only tank tested in a barrel. (neutral only..no high revs.)

Bob..... Water flowing heavily out the exhaust relief ports on the back of the exhaust housing slightly below the powerhead is a good sign that the water pump is working as it should.

However, water should also be shooting out of that water tell tale outlet. I believe that, on that model, the tell tale outlet hose is connected to the top portion of the exhaust baffle plate (port side of the engine) where it is easy to get at. Remove that hose from the baffle plate. Run the engine momentarily and observe the water flow exiting the exhaust baffle plate. It should be quite forceful (even at an idle). Clean out the hose and the plastic tell tale outlet. Reattach the hose and check for a water flow improvement.

Bob, I have had the same problem on my Johnson 9.9 That water pump telltale has been clogged on and off. Blow the lines through with compressed air. I just took the air compressor and attached it to the water pump indicator as it attaches to the block and blew it through.
