I have a 1986 Mercury 115 6 cylinder. Every time I take it out it will not start. I then have to take out the spark plugs and clean them. They have oil all over them. Once I have cleaned and replace them it starts fine. I mix my oil manually 50:1 exactly, so I don't think there's a problem there. Could this be a carboration problem?

Roger,

You might be running too rich due to an improperly adjusted idle mixture, or a flooding carb. The mixture screw on the front of the carb should be backed out about 1 1/2 turns from a lightly seated position. You might be able to lean it as much as a half turn from there. If you go too far the engine will start to sputter at idle. You can tell if a carb is flooding by looking into the carb bore when squeezing the primer. If the float chamber valve is not sealing you will see fuel coming up through the main jet. You will see fuel coming out of the vent hole on the float chamber also.

Another thing you should check is the oil bleeder lines on the starboard side of the block. These allow oil from the crankcase to be drawn into the intake. There are two check valves, one at the top and one at the bottom of the block. If these are not working properly there might be too much oil accumulating in the crankcase, which can cause the plugs to foul.

Check the bleed inserts inside the tranfer port covers , they are often missing. Will cause hard starting and poor idling.
