Just acquired Johnson 50HP motor. I believe it is an electric shift? Has 2 Cylinders and it is a 1971 50 HP Johnson motor.
Motor has not been started in some time, and I am the 6th or 7th owner of motor.
What precautions should I take??
Compression test---what is acceptable
Where does the water on this model exit motor. I don't see a hole, just two slots is this for h20 to exit?
Motor needs a starter, any ideas where to have rebuilt or purchase reasonable.
Does this model accept water muffler??
This motor (50HP) will replace a 1962 75HP Johnson, and I had a Jonson tach on dash. (1960 Larson 16ft fiberglass) Will I be able to use this tach?? if so which wires go to the tack. The 50 HP has 13 wires from motor to throttle control housing.
Their is a horn like bell in throttle control what is this?? I think it might be overheat bell??
I know this is lengthly but I am taking Wednesday 4-10-02 off to work on boat and hopefully get it started. I am sure I will write for more information. Thanks Jerry |

Jerry I was in a similar situation awhile back with a 65 hp 72 Johnson...Best piece of advise buy the service manual listed for the specific engine it is probably about 40 bucks or so but its the best investment you could make. I have been almost completly through mine and saved a fortune on what the local shop wanted to charge. The book gives you the exact specs and tells how the different parts work and why. You will probably have to start by a Carb rebuild or clean. the Horn is an overheat bell. Not sure on the Tach.
