Model: 154046 This engine has the thru hub exhaust and a hole located in the back under the powerpack housing which emits some exhaust and spits water. I bought this motor and replaced the waterpump to make sure it good, but water flow is still just spitting out of this hole. My question is how much water is supposed to flow out of this hole? I can't find any p-hole on this model. I have taken it out all day on the water with no apparent cooling problems. I also noticed, after the fact, that this model shows a water intake screen under the waterpump plate which I don't recall seeing. Is this prone to plugging up and how are they removed and cleaned? I appreciate any expertise on this model.

Tad.... You are correct about the 1974 year, and that model did not have a water tell tale outlet. The majority of the water is dispelled out through the prop area, with a minor portion being released via the hole you mention, just below the powerhead, in the exhaust housing.

The water pump should have a sealer applied to all surface to surface or, surface to gasket areas in order to avoid possible air leaks. Hopefully you replaced the entire water pump and not just the impeller. Scoring on the bottom impeller plate or the upper s/s housing could kick up a air pocket.

For what it's worth, I use regular gasket sealer on the gaskets (if present). The kind that comes in a can that has a small brush attached to the screw off cap. For surface to surface areas, I use either "OMC Adhesive" or "Marprox Sealer 1000". The Sealer 1000 does come in other forms (mfg) such as the "Boat Armor" brand, but it will always state "Sealer 1000".

The intake screen has notches at the top of it that keeps it from rising up. If you have intentions of removing it, I strongly suggest that you have another one on hand as it's unlikely that you'll get it out in one piece. If it gets clogged, it would be on the outside and therefore very easy to clean. If you run the engine without that screen, it's possible to damage the water pump.

Thanks Joe, for the good information. I hadn't put adhesive on the impeller plate previously but now I have. I take it that when the water pump fails, it will not spit the water from the exhaust housing hole? One more unrelated question for the same engine. I've heard talk of a kit to upgrade these to an electronic ignition. Do you have any ideas on this? Kit part number, availability, price, difficulty in installation, etc. Thank you again for your help.

Tad
