I just dropped the lower unit to replace the water pump impeller. When I lowered the shaft down out of the motor I noticed some wear/fretting on it approx. 1/2" to 1" below the splines. There is a roller bearing right below the pump impeller and seal, but is there a roller bearing up top below the spline joint that could be causing this wear? I would think that the roller bearing would be above the spline joint for serviceability, but what would be causing this wear. The wear has the same appearance as a shaft that has been turning inside a bearing race. If there is a bearing below the spline how would you get the shaft back up thru it after dropping the lower end.(assuming the bearing is in good shape.) Thanks for any advice/help. Stu |

THERE ISN'T A BEARING AT THIS SPOT. YOUR DRIVESHAFT IS PROBABLY RUBBING ON THE ALUMINUM EXHAUST TUBE. TO CHECK THIS YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE POWERHEAD AND THEN THE ADAPTOR PLATE ON THE TOP OF THE DRIVESHAFT HOUSING. YOU MAY BE ABLE TO SEE FROM THE BOTTOM WITH A FLASHLIGHT BUT YOU HAVE TO DO THE PREVIOUS TO REPAIR IT.....BRIAN |
