I Started out this season with a 1/2 empty fuel tank on my 1992 150hp Johnson and 6 new plugs. I don't remember if I used fuel stabilizer last fall, but I did run the boat once in mid-winter. The story goes, I filled the tank this spring and added the usual carbon gaurd and went to the lake. The engine seemed a little hard to start but I thought it may have been flooded. Anyway, after starting-up it ran fine except, after running up the lake about 5-10 minutes to my fishing hole, when I slowed down the motor seemed to miss intermittently. It was not very noticeable sort of a da-da-dada, then all seemed fine. Two weeks later, I put the boat in and the miss was back. It occured when first started and running slow to mid range of RPM's. After running for 10-15 minutes the miss went away. I ran the tank down to near empty, approximately 6 gallons, and filled with a fresh tank. The next day the when taking the boat to the marina to load onto the trailer, the miss was back but was very very faint.

My question is: Should I look for carb problems or ignition problems first? Secondly, I am worried that the fuel my have gotton moisture or gone bad over the winter. If so is it likely to self correct and if not, what are the logical steps to diagnose the problem?

Jack..... From what you've said, and the way you explained the problem, it sounds more like a fuel related problem to me. An ignition problem usually gets worse as the engine runs, not better. A fuel problem, on the other hand, if moisture or whatever had corrupted the fuel, it would have the effect of lowering the octane rating if nothing else. Note that if the carburetors themselves were the problem, they would stay that way, not come and go. A cold engine and poor fuel would affect a engine exactly as you've described, causing the s/plugs to foul somewhat. I've encountered this in the past and found the cure to be new fuel and to clean the s/plugs even though they're new, or replace them. I've found it beneficial to take a straight solid piece of mechanics wire, pound the end of it flat, and use it to scrape down around the inner portion of the s/plug porcelain to remove any difficult particles. Your last remarks sounds like that engine is on its way to straightening itself out anyway though. Good Luck.
