Hi, Picked up a 2001 Johnson 25 HP yesterday, uncrated it and hung it on a stand. Everything seems to be in order, with the exception of the tilt mechanism. There are two bars that have an "L" shaped slot in them, they slide up and down over a stud of some sort; to lock the engine in the tilted position, the bars slide back and the bottom of the "L" locks into the stud. The top of the bars have a small cylinder shaped protrusion, which is used to turn them so they lock into the stud. A rod holds the bars, the lever, and a special "washer" together; the bars turn freely on the rod, but the washer and lever turn with the rod as one piece. The lever and the "washer" have a special shape to them so that they grip the protrusion on the bars and force them to lock. The bar opposite the lever has too much slop when the lever is in the tilted position. What ends up happening is that the bottom of the "L" in the bar does not seat properly over the stud. It can simply be slid over the stud manually, but the slop allows it to slide off... This engine is still under warranty, and I can take it in to have it serviced, but it would be far more convenient to just make the neccesary adjustment myself. I'm buying a book tomorrow, but things like this are not often covered; Can I just spin the "washer" on the rod?.. How is this corrected? Thanks in advance; Jon |
