I'm trying to disassemble a Mariner 150 lower unit. The prop is off and a dealer removed the clutch dog. Does the prop shaft just pull out? Also, does the shaft from the engine pull out from the top? Help! Thanks.

Bob,

The clutch dog fits around the prop shaft and is secured by a lock pin, and a circular spring which holds the pin in place. You have to remove the prop shaft to take the clutch dog off, so I'm a little confused by your comments. Yes, the prop shaft just pulls out after you remove the bearing carrier at the rear of the case.

The driveshaft is secured by a nut at the bottom, just beneath the pinion gear. You have to reach into the case with a wrench and hold the nut, as you turn the driveshaft to unscrew it. It helps to have a socket that fits the spleens on the end of the driveshaft, but you can improvise here. Just be careful not to damage the driveshaft.

You have to remove the base of the water pump, and then you can pull the driveshaft up and out of the gearcase along with the bearing.

FURTHER TO THE PREVIOUS MESSAGE WHICH IS CORRECT. HOWEVER IF YOU HAVE A V-6 150 YOU PROBABLY HAVE AN EZ SHIFT LOWER UNIT. TO REMOVE THE PROPSHAFT ON THIS ONE YOU HAVE TO SHIFT THE LOWER UNIT INTO NUETRAL FIRST AND THEN SLIDE THE PROPSHAFT AND CLUTCH DOG ASSY OUT OF THE UNIT. IF YOU NEED ANY PARTS PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I HAVE A GOOD ONE DISASSEMBLED IN MY SHOP RIGHT NOW. THANKS AND GOOD LUCK.
