I picked up a 87' Johnson 6HP without a manual,person I got it from found it in garage of new house.My question is how do you use the choke for starting motor.It dosen't control the butterfly.It has a gas line from the bottom plastic fuel bowl and another gas line to block by the carb.This is new to me.Always had chokes control the butterfly.Tried to start it by pulling plunger out.It started and ran pushed in half way then all the way .Seems reasonable.Motor will run for a few minutes and stall.If I pull choke out to half way I can keep it running .But it starts to load up,so I push it in and it runs for a minute and starts to die again.Only way to keep it running is to go from half choke to no choke.Any info would be welcome. Bill.... You're starting the engine properly. That setup actually is sort of a manual fuel injection system to start the engine. With the plunger out, fuel is allowed to enter the intake manifold area, finding its way to the combustion chamber and fire. Pushing it in shuts that system down and the engine at that point relies on obtaining fuel via the carburetor.
When a engine sits for any length of time, the carburetor gums up and becomes fouled, in which case it is impossible for fuel to flow through the jets, passageways, etc. I would surmise that this engine has been sitting for quite awhile.
Bottom line is that you, in all probability have a fouled carburetor which will require removing, cleaning, and rebuilding. Best to install a complete carburetor repair kit.
