| 25 mercury stalls getting on plane |

I have a 1989 25 hp mercury that stalls when getting on plane occasionialy. I can remove the cover from the motor and it will not stall what is the problem, carburator? |

Bcobb..... Mercurys aren't my line of expertise but your problem is one that would pertain to any outboard. Removing the hood (cover) has nothing to do with the carburetor. If a carburetor was faulty, it would remain in that condition regardless of the hood. In all probability (this is usually the case), your engine has an exhaust leak somewhere, and with the hood on, the exhaust is entering the powerhead area and is being drawn into the carburetor intake. Removing the hood allows proper air to be drawn into the carb instead of exhaust fumes.
