I own a 150 mercury inline 6 on a 17 foot hydrostream. My problem is that the motor runs great when hooked to a garden hose (although it is a hard starter)however when I put the boat in the water, It refuses to take off (just keeps stalling) about 1 out of 10 takeoff tries it gets up and runs excellent. On a dyno it it runs strong and compression is good. I have been told that a corroded exhaust plate could affect backpressure when the boat is in the water but the garden hose produces around 40 psi, isn't this more pressure than when the boat is in the water? I've also been told it could be faulty reed valves or fouled carburators. Any suggestions

TJALEX,

I'm not sure why it would run well on the dyno, but I have had the same sort of problems with my merc L6 115. Rebuilding and then re-adjusting the carbs fixed it; I think there are a variety of things that can cause that though, a lack of fuel supply from a bad fuel pump or clogged filter would give about the same symptoms and would be my next guess. I'll explain this assuming that your fuel system is comparable to mine:

There is one fuel line that leaves the fuel pump and heads into the top carb; pull that line off at the carbs. Pump the primer bulb and see if there is an unrestricted fuel flow coming out of the line after the fuel pump. It should really be easy to get the fuel through there; if something seems wrong, it's probably in the line somewhere before your fuel pump (filters,anti-siphon.. etc.).

If everything is OK there, keep the line disconnected and crank the engine over; you should get a steady pulse of fuel coming out of that line. It won't be much, but it should steadily pulse out. If something seems wrong with the fuel pump and the lines seem OK (no fuel or air leaks etc.), rebuild the fuel pump - very easy job.

If you can't pin it down after that you probably should look into the carbs, especially if the engine has been sitting for a while or if they havn't been rebuilt in a couple years. There are low-speed jet adjustments on the carbs, and if they are set too lean it will also cause the same problem, but if it ran well before and then started what you described I don't think it makes sense to make adjustments for a clogged carb.
