I have a '87 6hp sail model(E6SLCUD) that was used in salt water.I removed the lower unit to replace the water pump impeller and the driveshaft is stuck in the crankshaft and will not come out.The seal in the exhaust tube is bad and let salt water in to the splines.I removed the power head and have been spraying the splines with liquid wrench.Clamped driveshaft in a vice and with a block of wood over bottom of powerhead "tapped hard" ,no luck.I'm out of ideas, need a few more to try.Is there a way to install impeller with shaft still in crank splines? thanks Zippy |

Zippy..... Sorry to say but that shaft has to come out. There are times when I've had to grab onto a portion of the driveshaft with vice grips, then pound the vice grips downwards unmercifully, usually destroying the driveshaft (hard to keep it from distoring....going crooked). Even with salt water entering that area, coating the splines heavily with anti corrosive grease has been known to prevent the seizing problem. Wish you luck. Joe |

Joe update on stuck driveshaft.I got the impeller in without getting the driveshaft out. What I did was grind a small notch in the metal impeller cup of the water pump.I then glued the plastic keyway to the driveshaft with "marine Goop".After the goop dried I put some silicone grease on the rubber grommet so the copper tube slides in easy. Then I put te impeller in the water pump and indexed the impeller notch with the notch in the pump and the one I put in the metal cup. Then I slid the pump up the shaft to where it goes on te glued on keyway. When everything looked good I marked a tooth on the fly wheel and a reference point. Now I slid the pump down the shaft and bolted it to the gearcase making sure the impeller didn't move.I slid the lower unit up the shaft and with my flywheel mark indexed and a little patience in it went. Ran it for an hour today, pumps water good.Just took a shot, dumb luck but i'll take it. Zippy |
