Hi,

I just picked up a 30 horse, 1987 johnson. Its starts every time I turn the key. Sometimes though when I take off it stalls out if I accelerate too quickly (full throttle). Outside of new plugs and gear case oil, is there anything I can do to service my engine. My friend suggested cleaning the fuel filter, will this make a difference.

Ken.... That problem is usually caused by either a clogged fouled carburetor, or A improper adjustment that is allowing the carburetor butterfly to open too soon in relation to the timing. In either case, something that should be corrected by someone who knows exactly what they're doing.

Dear Joe

My 85 Johnson Engine (1978)was out at sea in Weymouth working perfectly well when for no reason the power went. It made it back to shore at about 5 knots with full throttle. It runs perfectly well in the water tank. I have done a compression test and the results are : 2 of the cylinders read 110 psi, one is 115 psi and one is 105 psi. Do you have any ideas as to what the problem is and how to solve it please. Yours gratefully Helen

Helen... Standing in back of the engine, the cylinders are as follows:
-2-----1
-4-----3
Number 1 & 3 being the starboard bank, number 2 & 4 being the port bank. It's always a good idea to note the compression in relation to what cylinder. The same holds true with a spark check. The compression reading you state should be okay, especially for a 24 year old engine. However, double check the compression.

Now, with the spark plugs still removed, rig up a spark tester so that you can check to see that the spark will jump a 7/16" gap on all cylinders. The spark should jump that gap with a strong blue flame.

Your engine has two (2) powerpacks. It's very possible that one of them has failed, resulting in the engine running on two cylinders. If so, there should be a definite difference between the s/plugs on one bank and the other bank.

An engine running in a test tank or on a flushette may sound like it's running fine, but that can be very misleading. Let me know what you find.
