Here is the scenario: The motor had sat in dry storage since 1979 until I took ownership of it in the spring of 2000.The elderly gentleman who had the motor still had the original books, paperwork, and bill of sale from when the motor was new.He said he only used it bout 3 months per year for each of the 6 fishing seasons in fresh water.A bolt had come loose in the stator plate and allowed the condensors, stator and coils to raise up and be shredded by the flywheel. Instead of fixing it he just bought another motor.I replaced all of these and gave it a general tune up and got her running like a top. With the motor sitting that long (21 years)I'm thinking that maybe a seal somewhere has dried out and shrunk or cracked, something of this nature. My ?? is what seal(s) would be a good culprit to look at?? and what would be an inexpensive remedy?? After parts, controls, ignition, etc. I've put more in the motor than I wanted to so any info that anyone could give so that I could possibly fix this myself would greatly help me out. Thanks in advance. |

Mikepaul, You may want to start by checking to see if the rubber rings are present on the upper and lower screws that are used to fill/drain the gear lube; and mabye then pull off the lower unit and check for anything obvious around the assembly containing the splined cylinder that the shift rod fits over. That could be an easy fix. After that you have the seal where the driveshaft exits and where the propshaft exits (there must be some type of removable bearing carrier in there too that has a seal), to repair either one of those seals means tearing into your lower unit. In my opinion, the worst thing that you'll have to do, if your lower unit is damaged from water, is not much more difficult than what you might have to do to fix the "leak". I once had a 70 HP Johnson that had such a sealing problem that after every trip the lube would come out white, if I let it sit for a day, water would actually be visible when draining it. The engine was mainly used in salt water too. I just found some cheap (automotive-I don't recomend this though, marine lube has special water-absorbing properties) gear lube that had the right viscosity, and changed it every other trip. The lower unit never gave me a problem, and I put about 100 hours on it that way. Unless you are leaving this boat in the water for the season (or year, small boats only have seasons here), or you're planning on heading out into some big water, the most inexpensive remedy is going to probably be to just keep fresh gear lube in it. Unless it is actually visibly leaking lube out, or you are ending up with clear water when you drain the lube out, you'll be fine. Make checking the gear lube part of your pre-boating checklist. Thanks Jon, I don't leave her in the water, she has been winterized and covered for storage. When it warms up a little I will take your suggestions and see waht I can do.I actually did check the o-rings around the drain/fill screws earlier this year and they were in good order. |
