I recently purchases a 10 foot Avon inflatable (OEM's via West Marine) and am now deciding on the outboard engine. Any suggestions of size of engine and preferred manufactures ?

Jim,
If it's the fully inflatable type with soft floor and add-on outboard bracket, then a 2 or 3.5 Hp pushes it along quite well with only 1 or 2 up. If you want to move with 4 adults on-board then a 4hp is ideal (I believe that 4hp is the max recommended for the 10 footer). Beware that the rubber outboard bracket holders are glued on and thus peel off, so always tether the "clip-on".
Brands are personal choices, I recommend buy new, keep warranty documents (receipts etc), be sure that parts and service is available for your usage areas and flog-the-hell-out-of-it while under warranty!
PS These are great tenders, stronger than oysters and will float 3 adults while fully deflated! But always remove the outboard (and loose gear) when towing - as they flip easily under tow. |
