I need some help. First I'll tell you what I'm trying to do. please let me know if it's possible and if it will work.
I have an 3.5hp briggs and stratton lawn mower motor that runs well. I would like to somehow weld a prop to it (keeping in mind the flywheel situation) and a handle to the outside case to convert it to an outboard motor.

Dan,
I know people have converted small air cooled briggs type engines (with a horizontal shaft) into inboard engines. But converting a lawn mower engine into an outboard will be tough! Are you talking about clamping it to the transom and having the shaft extend aft at a shallow angle the way the early outboards did, or are you planning on building a lower unit gearbox of some kind?
I looked in some of the old Popular Mechanics Boating books from the 1940's because that sounds like the sort of article they would have. If found a few articles on converting a model A Ford engine into an inboard boat engine, but nothing on converting a lawnmower into an outboard.
There are a lot of small inexpensive used outboard s available... wouldn't that be a better bet to buy one and fix it up.
You might try the Antique Outboard Motor Club, but I really don't think they are going to have much either.
